Phonics is an important skill that forms the foundation of reading and writing. It focuses on the relationship between letters and the sounds they represent. It is the practice we use to break down words into individual sounds and blend the sounds to form words. This is important for building strong reading and writing skills in young learners. At Sunflower Station Preschool we play sound recognition games like I Spy and Odd One out. Our students mold playdoh into letters, sounding out the letter and matching it to the correct card. We use music and movement songs to enhance their learning and worksheets for children to practice their skills. Our children as young as one begin this important journey by exploring the phonics rich environment of their classroom. We introduce letters and sounds with flash cards, story time, and rhyming songs throughout the day. These activities can make learning an adventure. We strive to give children the tools to discover a love for learning that will prepare them for success.
